PWN-380 Burnishing Tires

by on Apr.29, 2021, under Podcast

Will Fey fake us out with promises of talk about his house, but in fact, just talk about testing his new Pirelli tires? Maybe, but Fey also talks about moving from the Winter house into the new (dirty) house. Fey talks about rain shower heads and new flowers. Dr. Wes Stone asks about a musty smell from the air conditioner in his Honda.

    Hello FeyDriver!

Hope you had a good time burnishing the tires and the spare-rims are doing well.

What are your opinions on Continentals? I have pretty much wrapped everything in my garage in some flavor of Contis (purecontact for the volt, extremecontact DWs for the miata, even convinced hubby to put truecontacts on his ford fusion) but Contis are what I settled-upon after toying with Good Year Eagle RS-A (ecch) and several Kumho Ecsta ASXs on the Mazda3. I was always tempted by Michelins but the contis were always a bit more grippy and longer-lasting for less money and more noise.

    Hi Peter:

Thanks for your comment. I agree that Continentals are good tires and are a good product at a reasonable price. However, within any brand, there is such a wide range of quality – meaning you can get a cheap tire and an expensive tire within any BRAND, which you appear to have placed the many varieties on your cars. I have always encouraged people to spend as much as they can possibly afford on their tires to get up into the higher quality line. This needs to be tempered with the purpose and utility of the tire/vehicle. I wouldn’t put a high performance tire on a car that I only drove to the grocery store – which you appear to have done, as well.

I disagree on your evaluation of the Michelins. I have had Contis and Michelins on 2 vehicles and prefer the Michelins. I DON’T think the Contis are more grippy but I grant you that they lasted longer than the Michelins and are cheaper. I am a huge Micheliin Fanboy.

Good Year Eagles suck. I don’t know how they got a reputation as being a good tire – must have been some good promotional dollars spent there. Burn those garbage tires. I have no experience with Kumho. I am a good fan of Yokohama Advan line, and a BIG BIG fan of Pirelli P-Zero line, but am still evaluating the Pirelli P-Zero PZ4 summer high-performance that I just put on Porsche 911. I had some Pirelli P-Zero full winters on my Panamera and they were a MOST INCREDIBLE winter high-performance tire.

Thanks for your comments. I will try to remember to verbalize this on the next episode.
